The OSU Master Cattleman program is a comprehensive educational curriculum designed to enhance participants' proficiency in production and business management.

The objective of the Master Cattleman program is to enhance the profitability of beef operations and the quality of life of beef cattle producers. Producers equipped with vital information on all aspects of beef production, business planning, risk management, and marketing can build and maintain sustainable businesses.

Certification requires successful completion of 28 hours of Master Cattleman credit. The core curriculum consists of four hours from each of the following disciplines:

·        Nutrition and Management

·        Quality Assurance and Animal Health

·        Reproduction (cow-calf producers)

·        Natural Resouces

·        Business Planning and Management

·        Marketing and Risk Management

Approximately six specific topics are available within each discipline. Each topic provides the equivalent of one or two credit hours. The program allows flexibility to tailor the curriculum to fit local needs and interests. Proficiency in each topic is demonstrated by successful completion of a brief quiz.

OSU Cooperative Extension educators will plan and organize the Master Cattleman educational series and select the specific curriculum offered. They also will guide participants through common management decisions, while providing up-to-date research in an easily understood format.

One of the best commitments producers can make to improve their beef cattle management skills is to participate in the OSU Master Cattleman program.

The good ranch manager has a plan for coping wih ever-present risks, including those not under his or her direct control such as weather and market forces. Whether you're just beginning or are an experienced rancher, the OSU Master Cattleman program can help you get the most out of your investments in time, energy, and money.

This program is well worth the time investment. Backed by the OSU name and with additional support provided by local county Extension offices, it represents a valuable educational opportunity to improve beef cattle business management and production skills.

The program costs $75 and is offered to Oklahoma beef producers. The fee is to cover the costs of course materials. Participants receive an Oklahoma Beef Cattle Manual, instructional material, a producer certificate, Master Cattleman farm gate sign, and a notebook with the Master Cattleman logo.

A Master Cattleman Class in Woods County is tentatively being scheduled for February 2008. If you are interested in participating in the program, please contact Kourtney at 580-327-2786.
